Opening a Business in the Town of Somerville

Step 1:

Step 2:
Obtain Local and County Business License

The Town of Somerville, TN requires a license to start a business. You will also need a permit to change a sign or alter a building located in the Town of Somerville City Limits.  You may download the application and bring into the Town of Somerville Office located at 13085 N. Main Street, Somerville, TN 38068

FAYETTE COUNTY:

STEP 3:
Obtain Permits / Licensing

Depending on what type of business you are running, determines which department is needed to obtain the local permits. The Town of Somerville requires permits for projects relating to the construction, alteration, and additions to buildings. Categories of permitting include building, energy, swimming pools, signs, electrical, plumbing, fuel gas, mechanical, fire suppression, demolitions, and fire alarms.

Town of Somerville Licensing-Contractors
The Town of Somerville Building Inspector issues trade licenses and registrations for electrical, plumbing, HVAC, sheet metal, steamfitter, and refrigeration trades. It also issues general contractor licenses and subcontractor licenses for commercial and residential building and alterations. The Building Inspector issues specialty contractor licenses for building wrecking, building moving, manufactured home installation and alteration, sign erection, swimming pool installation, fire suppression, and fire alarm businesses and crafts.

The Building Inspector maintains records of the licensing boards, license applicants and license holders including contractor continuing education.

STEP 4:
Employer Requirements

WORKERS’ COMPENSATION INSURANCE
The Tennessee Workers’ Compensation Act requires certain employers to provide workers’ compensation insurance benefits.  Two equally important objectives are reached when this occurs.

UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE TAX
Every employer in Tennessee is required to fill out a Report to Determine Status, Application for Employer Number (LB-0441). Submitting this form will determine the status of your liability for unemployment insurance. If you are liable for unemployment insurance premiums in Tennessee, you will be assigned an eight-digit employer account number.

LABOR LAWS
